Basic Dyes
Basic Dyes
Basic dyes, also known as cationic dyes, are salts composed of positively charged pigments and hydrochloric acid, oxalic acid, or zinc oxide. Hence, basic dyes are also referred to as "cationic dyes". Basic dyes were the earliest class of synthetic dyes, with the first synthetic dye in the world, mauveine, belonging to this category.
Basic dyes offer a complete spectrum of colors, vibrant hues, high color yield, and are extensively used for dyeing paper, cotton, wool, silk, bamboo, leather, feathers, and grass products. They can also be used for dyeing acetate fibers and acrylic fibers. When dyeing cotton fibers with basic dyes, it is essential to pre-mordant with tannic acid before dyeing and printing. However, the fastness of dyeing on protein fibers is poor, especially in terms of lightfastness, thus limiting the use of basic dyes in fiber products significantly.
The color base of basic dyes can also be used as oil-soluble dyes for stationery and educational products such as carbonless copy paper, ballpoint pen ink, stamp pad ink, and colored pencils. Basic dyes can also be formulated into lake pigments (see organic pigments) for coloring paints, inks, plastics, rubber products, etc.
